Three games into its ACC Tournament run at Louisville Slugger Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, the second-ranked UNC baseball team has clearly taken the ballpark’s name to heart.
After blowing out the No. 6 seed Miami Hurricanes 12-4 on Saturday night in the ACC Semifinals, the Tar Heels have now outscored their three opponents 34-8 on the way to a spot in Sunday’s Championship Game.
Junior shortstop Logan Warmoth went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for UNC (47-11), while ACC Freshman of the Year Ashton McGee added two hits, a home run and three RBIs of his own against the Hurricanes (31-27).
Miami scored three runs in the top of the first inning off Tar Heel starter Gianluca Dalatri, but was unable to muster much else.
A rain delay of more than an hour and a half forced both starting pitchers–including Dalatri–out of the game with the Hurricanes leading 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Following the storm, however, it was all UNC.
The Tar Heels tacked on a pair of runs against reliever Michael Mediavilla–one on a sacrifice fly, the other an RBI groundout–in order to take the lead right out of the break.
Warmoth then kickstarted a three-run sixth inning for the Tar Heels with an RBI single, before adding a two-run triple in the seventh frame–where UNC added four more runs to its tally.
It was the 18th win in the last 21 games for the Tar Heels, who will face Florida State on Sunday at noon for the league title.
