Graduate guard Stephanie Watts poured in a game-high 26 points Thursday night at Littlejohn Coliseum to lead the UNC women’s basketball team to a 77-64 win over Clemson.
Watts made 12 of her 20 shots from the floor on the way to matching the highest scoring total by any Tar Heel this season. She also added five rebounds, four steals and two assists.
The Tar Heels (11-8, 6-8 ACC) also received a huge boost from freshman point guard Deja Kelly, who scored 19 points for her best scoring game since pouring in 22 on Dec. 17 against Syracuse.
It was the third consecutive victory for UNC, which used a 9-0 run in the second quarter to help build a 12-point halftime lead.
The Tar Heels forced 24 turnovers in the game and led by as many 23 points early in the fourth quarter–until a late run by Clemson (10-10, 5-10 ACC) made the final score a bit closer.
“It’s good to get a win on the road,” UNC head coach Courtney Banghart said. “This group is growing up and locking in defensively, which is leading to good offense. Just a big win on the road, two in a row.”
