CHAPEL HILL – Two UNC football standouts are on the radar for two of the game’s top awards.

Senior defensive end, Kareem Martin, is on the Bednarik Award watch list for the nation’s best defensive player, and senior quarterback, Bryn Renner, is a candidate for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the national player of the year.

Martin leads Carolina’s defensive roster, tallying 40 tackles, including 15.5 for a combined loss of 56 yards. He also had four sacks, three pass breakups, and eight quarterback hurries in his 2012 season.

Bryn Renner comes back to Chapel Hill after a strong 2012 season.  Renner passed for 3,356 yards and a school record of 28 touchdowns.

The watch lists incorporate players from several Football Bowl Subdivision programs and divisions from coast to coast.

On Tuesday, the watch lists for the Mackey Award (the nation’s most outstanding tight end) and Rimington Trophy (the nation’s premier center) will be announced.
