CHAPEL HILL – The No. 2 UNC baseball team fell one run short of an extra-inning comeback and fell 8-7 to No. 7 UVA in their ACC finale.

With one out in the bottom of the 11th and Carolina trailing 8-4, freshman Landon Lassiter reached on a throwing error which also scored sophomore Mike Zolk. Junior Colin Moran followed that with a single up the middle scoring senior Chaz Frank. Trailing 8-6 and with one out, freshman Skye Bolt stepped to the plate and flew out to left field. After the catch, Lassiter made it home, but freshman Michael Massardo—who was pinch running for Moran—was caught out returning to first base to end the game.

The Tar Heels trailed the Cavaliers 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth when Frank scored off a single by Moran that forced the extra frames.

UVA used all but one of its lineup and a two-RBI triple as part of its four-run 11th inning to take clear control of the game. A heads-up double play ended the UNC run as the Cavaliers cleared the bases to end the contest.

With the loss, Carolina fell to 47-8, 21-7 in the ACC; Virginia improved to 45-9, 22-8. The decision also marks the second consecutive series loss for UNC after falling to Georgia Tech 2-1 last weekend.

With the Atlantic Division and ACC regular season titles wrapped up in game two, the Tar Heels have one game remaining on their schedule. No. 8 Florida State travels to the Hill Monday for a non-conference regular-season finale at the Bosh.

Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.; ESPNU agreed to pick up the contest. You can hear all the action live beginning at the first pitch on WCHL and streaming online at Chapelboro.com immediately following an abbreviated version of the Evening News with Aaron Keck.

The ACC baseball tournament begins Wednesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park with Carolina as the top seed.
