Fans at Boshamer Stadium were treated to some extra baseball on Friday night, as the third-ranked Tar Heels needed 10 innings to get the job done against the rival Duke Blue Devils.
A walk-off single from senior outfielder Tyler Lynn gave UNC a 3-2 victory in the extra frame, which helped head coach Mike Fox and company avoid their first ACC series loss of the season.
The win also helped the Tar Heels (43-11, 22-7 ACC) match a school record for most conference victories in a single season.
Lynn’s bases-loaded infield single was his second walk-off hit this season for UNC, as he delivered a similar ending against Clemson on April 30. He was also one of six Tar Heels to record a hit in the game.
Ashton McGee and Logan Warmoth led the offense by each going 2-for-5, but it was the pitching from junior JB Bukauskas that kept the Tar Heels alive deep into the night.
The first-round MLB Draft prospect threw seven innings against the Blue Devils (28-26, 12-17 ACC), while striking out eight hitters and giving up just two runs on four hits.
Duke took an early lead against Bukauskas with RBIs from Kennie Taylor and Jimmy Herron in the first and second innings, respectively.
From there, however, the Ashburn, Virginia native pitched the next five innings without allowing so much as a single hit.
The Tar Heel offense responded in the third inning with an RBI single from McGee, but would have to wait until the seventh to finally tie things up.
Senior Adam Pate came around to score in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice hit by Brian Miller–which was the last run manufactured before extra innings.
Once the 10th inning rolled around, the first three UNC hitters of the frame all reached base–loading the bags with no outs.
Brandon Riley hit into a fielder’s choice that saw Logan Warmoth thrown out at home, but then Lynn came to the plate in the very next at-bat and made sure the Tar Heel faithful saw their team leave as winners.
Freshman closer Josh Hiatt was credited with the win after pitching all three innings in relief of Bukauskas.
Up Next:
The Tar Heels will look for a series victory in their final regular season game of 2017, which is set to begin Saturday at 2 p.m.
