No. 18 Syracuse ended the No. 13 UNC men’s soccer team’s unbeaten run in 2023 on Friday night, defeating the Tar Heels 1-0 at Dorrance Field.

The defending national champion Orange went ahead in the 23rd minute and held fast after that. Syracuse’s defense contained Carolina to zero shots of any kind during the first half, but UNC came out with verve in the second half and fired off nine shots. Four of those went on the Orange net, including three in the final six minutes, but Syracuse goalkeeper Jahiem Wickham was up to the task each time. Quenzi Huerman led the team with four shots, including one of the crossbar in the 65th minute.

The loss drops Carolina to 5-1-4 on the season and 1-1-3 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will return to action at home against Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday at 6 p.m., when they will try to start another long unbeaten streak.
