The UNC men’s soccer team gave up the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute at Virginia on Friday night and fell 1-0 to the Cavaliers in the regular-season finale. The Tar Heels finish the season 7-3-5 overall and 2-3-3 in ACC play.

UNC had its chances, outshooting Virginia 6-1 in the first half and sending a pair of shots on goal, but could not find a way through the Cavalier defense. Carolina earned three corner kicks in the first half but none in the second.

The loss means the Tar Heels will be the No. 7 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament and will face No. 10 seed Virginia Tech in the first round on Wednesday, November 1. That match is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Dorrance Field. UNC tied the Hokies 1-1 in Blacksburg back on September 8 in its conference opener. Whoever wins Wednesday’s match will move on to face No. 2 overall seed Wake Forest in the second round on November 5. That match would be played in Winston-Salem.
