The UNC football program isn’t wasting much time filling in holes on its coaching staff. Just one week after the departure of former offensive line coach Jack Bicknell (along with offensive coordinator Phil Longo) to Wisconsin, the Tar Heels announced the hiring of Randy Clements as their new offensive line coach.

“We’re excited that Randy, his wife Polly, and their sons Jordan and Jayson are a part of the Carolina football family,” said UNC head coach Mack Brown. “Randy is a tough, hard-nosed offensive line coach that has a tremendous amount of experience working in systems similar to our offense. He’s helped produce explosive offenses everywhere he’s been, while showing a knack for protecting the quarterback and limiting negative plays.”

Clements most recently coached at North Texas, where he and head coach Seth Littrell (himself a former UNC offensive coordinator) built one of the nation’s best rushing attacks. In 2021, Clements’ first season with the school, the Mean Green rushed for 233.5 yards per game, which ranked fifth in the country. In 2022, North Texas gave up just 11 sacks all season and averaged nearly 34 points per game.

“Randy is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country, period, and I’ve been around a lot of great ones,” Littrell said. “Everything he does is fundamentally sound, he’s great schematically, and the kids love playing for him. Randy is the complete package and everything you’re looking for in an offensive line coach.”

Clements has also coached at Ole Miss, Florida State, Houston and Baylor. At each stop, Clements’ offensive line has helped his teams to offensive excellence, including a Rebels group which led the SEC with 555 yards per game. While working at Baylor, Clements produced the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in four straight seasons from 2012 through 2015, including two first-round draft picks. The Bears led the nation in total offense in 2013, 2014 and 2015, becoming just the second team in history to accomplish this feat three years in a row.
