Head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels will be one of numerous college basketball powers headed to Hawaii in 2024.

The UNC men’s basketball program confirmed on Tuesday it will be playing in the 2024 Maui Invitational Tournament. The news was first reported by FanDuel’s Jon Rothstein last fall. It will be the first time UNC will head to Hawaii since 2016 (the team played in the 2020 tournament, which was relocated to Asheville due to the pandemic).

Among the other teams in the field are reigning national champions Connecticut. Auburn, Memphis, Michigan State, Dayton, Colorado and Iowa State are also in the tournament.

The Tar Heels have won the Maui Invitational four times: in 1999, 2004, 2008 and 2016. Each of those seasons saw Carolina eventually advance to the Final Four, and the last three coincided with a national championship win. UNC’s last appearance saw the Tar Heels fall to Texas, 69-67, in the championship game.

The Maui Invitational is another in a long list of prestigious fall tournaments the Tar Heels are scheduled to appear in. This coming season, Carolina will head to Oregon to play in the Phil Knight Invitational during the Thanksgiving holiday. Previous reports also indicate UNC will play in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas during the 2023-24 season.
