UNC football head coach Mack Brown joined Aaron Keck this morning for “Mondays with Mack,” presented by Chapel Hill Tire.
Brown’s Tar Heels suffered their second consecutive loss on Saturday in a 46-42 thriller at Georgia Tech. Carolina held a lead as large as 11 points in the second half but was powerless to stop the Yellow Jacket rushing attack, which amassed more than 350 yards.
Here are a few of Brown’s answers on various topics:
On the loss at Georgia Tech: You kind of repeat yourself when you say “disappointing defeat” because that’s what they are. It’s not exciting defeats. I’m proud of the guys that we’re 6-2, but we’ve lost two games the last two weeks in the fourth quarter, and we’ve been a fourth quarter team since we’ve been here. So that’s the disappointing part. We’ve done some really good things. We’re in a position to win both games the last two weeks and didn’t stop them in the fourth quarter and didn’t score points in the fourth quarter. So we’ve gotta figure that out and then try to do whatever we can do to get back on track this weekend.
On the upcoming game against Campbell: Glad we’re back at home. Glad it’s not fall break. Can’t wait to see our students on Saturday. Looks like it’s gonna be a beautiful day. And Campbell’s got a good team, so we’ve got four really exciting games here at the end. We’ve got Duke coming in and they’re playing really, really well. We go to Clemson, and that’s always one of the hardest places to play, and then to NC State, and that’s a hard place to play. And all three are rival games, so we’ve gotta get back on track this weekend. Campbell will come in like Georgia Tech and like Virginia and play their hardest and play their best and we’ve gotta find a way to win.
On WR Tez Walker’s condition: Everything’s checked out and, and he’s doing well. He actually spent the night in the hospital in Atlanta, and praise God that he’s OK. He was back here Sunday early afternoon and we let him sleep in yesterday and we haven’t had him over here to see him yet. He’s checked with our doctors and our trainers and hopefully we’ll see him today. I don’t have any idea about how he’ll be for the weekend.
On his message to the fans: This team’s still 6-2. We’re a few plays away from being undefeated and being a top 10 team. There’s a lot of parity out there in college football. Anybody could beat anybody. I think there’s five undefeated teams left. And we need to get back on track and start playing better defense this weekend. We’ve gotta continue to grow on offense and finish drives in that fourth quarter, continue to do things better in the kicking game. And the fans only get to see this team and Drake Maye two more times. So we’ve got Campbell this weekend. It looks like a beautiful day. It’ll start at 60 degrees and end up about 67. Come out, be excited, help us win the game. We are not sure what time the Duke game will be. I guess we’ll find out today, most likely. But we just have two games left to watch Drake Maye and this team. So let’s come out and support these young guys on their last two home games.

We only get to see Drake 2 more times. WHAT A REAL SHAME! But he better go before he is completely ruined at UNC!
Wonder if it’s possible that we only get to see Mack 2 more times?
If not, we’ll hear the same old comments from him: “We have to finish games. We have to cut down on mistakes. We have to cut down on penalties.”
We’re still mediocre at best under “Hall of Fame” Brown. Interesting that non-Hall of Fame coaches can completely turn around a program in a year or two, but a Hall of Fame Coach is still losing to less than mediocre teams on a REGULAR basis.
Mack was 11 and 23 at Tulane when UNC hired him the first time. He was only one game above .500 in conference games at Texas his last 4 years, and we hired him again.
It’s time for him to go and UNC go out and get AND PAY for a big-time, younger, energetic coach!
Derek, sorry I don’t share your opinions about Mack Brown, but you are entitled to them. Just wondering, what are you doing to make Carolina Football better? Contributing to NIL, Rams Club etc. etc? Attending home and away games????? Cheering and supporting the Tar Heels? Criticizing our coach and tearing down our program are not helping matters.
I was in the Rams Club for 35 years. But I don’t have sense enough or money enough to contribute to the NIL. I’ve gone to home games (and a few away games since the 70’s). The cool thing for you is that Mack isn’t going anywhere. And I pray for him and the players every day. It pains me to think like I do, but I have for a very long time. I hope and pray that we win out and go to a great bowl game. You never know!!!! I cheer and support the Heels every week, and while I am and have been critical of Mack, I’m not “tearing down our program.” I think UNC is the “diamond in the rough in college football, but we don’t seem to win. Maybe Mack is exactly what we need to get us into big-time top 10 football. That’s my hope!!!! Go Heels!!!
