During his weekly radio show, “Hubert Davis Live,” Monday night, UNC men’s basketball head coach Hubert Davis confirmed he would be increasing the size of his coaching staff beginning next season.
“It’s needed,” Davis told Jones Angell. “There’s just so much stuff out there… so much on the plate that will take you away from doing the most important thing: coaching basketball.
“We’re going to hire a GM [general manager],” Davis confirmed. “We need a director of marketing and fundraising, for NIL, for program needs. There needs to be a video coordinator with graphics, recruiting coordinator, all those different kinds of stuff that have to be built out.”
The hiring of a general manager – the first in the history of the men’s basketball program – would mirror moves made by other programs around the country. Notably, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer hired a general manager shortly after assuming his role, and UNC football head coach Bill Belichick made general manager Michael Lombardi one of his first hires in December. The UNC women’s basketball program also employs a general manager.
Davis suggested the new hires would signal the turning of a new leaf for his program, despite his insistence this past fall that the men’s basketball program would not be a “transactional” one.
“The old model for Carolina basketball just doesn’t work,” he said. “It’s not sustainable. It has to build out, because there’s so many things in play: NIL, the transfer portal, agents, international players. You just need a bigger staff to be able to maintain things, and you need a bigger staff so I can do what I’m supposed to be doing, and that’s coaching basketball.”
