When the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association released its list of All-State teams recently, a trio of local stars stood out.
Orange High School’s pitcher-catcher combo of Bryse Wilson and Brad Debo were each named to the 3A roster, while Chapel Hill High School’s all-around star Nick Hebert also made the cut.
Wilson, who was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of last month’s MLB Draft, was also named the 3A Player of the Year.
At 6-foot-2, 205 lbs, Wilson unleashed his physical dominance on opposing hitters all year long–posting a 0.75 ERA with 133 strikeouts across 84 innings, while also tossing a perfect game in Orange’s playoff opener against Eastern Wayne.
His catcher, Debo, did a fine job behind the plate–but perhaps his most important contributions to the Panthers’ 21-7 record came with the bat.
The future South Carolina Gamecock hit .446 and racked up an on-base percentage of .531–meaning he succeeded more often than not, in a sport where failing seven out of 10 times is considered OK.
Hebert, a 5-foot-7 dynamo from Chapel Hill, posted similar batting numbers as Debo (.425 batting average, .500 on-base percentage) but without the size that usually projects a player to do well at the next level.
Still, though, the Tigers were able to put together an identical 21-7 record through the exploits of their captain.
In two games between Orange and Chapel Hill this past season, the teams split the series–scoring a combined six runs apiece.
