The Lee County Yellowjackets continued where they left off in 2016 by defeating the Northwood Chargers 35 – 0 on opening night in Pittsboro.  The Jackets behind Notre Dame commit Jahmir Smith, a composed sophomore quarterback Collin Johnson, and a stubborn defense proved to be too much for the Chargers.

The Chargers began the season opener already with a key piece of their offensive puzzle missing by injury to starting quarterback Alex Parker.   Parker had experienced an injury earlier in the week in practice.  As a safety precaution Coach Harrington decided to give the quarterback duties to sophomore Jalen McAfee in his first varsity start.  The Chargers showed promise on multiple occasions  moving the football utilizing misdirection in their Wing T formation.  However, the combination of multiple miscues and a stout Yellowjacket defense stalled impressive drives.

Injuries to Charger players plagued the green and gold all night.  McAfee suffered a leg injury, and cramps from a hot night in Pittsboro sidelined star wingback Tyrell Baldwin and multi-talented Brendan Harrington later in the game.

Injury to backup quarterback Jalen McAfee put the duties in the hands of freshman Michael Possee mid way through the 4th quarter.  Possee completed 2 of 3 passes within a 4 minute time frame and looked very poised in his first game.

A special thanks to the staff of Northwood High School for their hospitality.  We will return to Charger stadium in 3 weeks when Northwood faces the Asheboro Blue Comets.  The Chargers travel to Siler City next Friday night to face the Jordan Matthews Jets.

The broadcast crew heads to Hillsborough next week when the Orange Panthers take on Hoggard Vikings in a 7:00 kickoff.
