UNC running back Omarion Hampton won a spot in an exclusive club on Monday, as the Associated Press named him a preseason first team All-American.

Hampton, who earned first team All-ACC and second team All-America honors from the AP in 2023 and is a preseason first team All-ACC honoree this fall, is coming off a sophomore season which saw him rack up 1,726 total yards and 16 total touchdowns. His 1,504 rushing yards rank second in UNC history for a single season. Hampton rushed for more than 100 yards seven different times, becoming the first Tar Heel since Giovani Bernard in 2011 to accomplish such a feat. Hampton is also the first Tar Heel since Don McCauley in 1970 to rush for 100 yards in six straight games. Hampton finished in college football’s top five rushers in total rushing yards, rushing yards per game (115.7) and all-purpose yards per game (132.8).

Aside from his AP and ACC honors, Hampton was named a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, honoring the nation’s top running back. The Sporting News, CBS, Sports Illustrated, the American Football Coaches Association and the Walter Camp Football Foundation all named Hampton an All-American.

Several award watch lists for 2024 have also included Hampton’s name. The Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards (honoring the national player of the year) and the Doak Walker Award have all given Hampton preseason nods.

Hampton and the Tar Heels will open the 2024 season at Minnesota on August 29 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
