Welcome to Wellness Wednesday, presented by Orange Partnership and airing on 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro.com!

This month, join a conversation with Josh Mecimore, Assistant Chief of Police, Chapel Hill Police Department, Samantha Luu, Director of Campus and Community Coalition, and Captain Brian (Bubba) Whitehurst of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month! As efforts increase to curb overconsumption and overserving, this month’s Wellness Wednesday spotlights some of the work being done to keep the season safe, along with merry and bright.

“Several years ago, collaborators within the UNC Gilling School of Global Public Health analyzed some data here locally in Orange County to quantify the burden of excessive drinking in Orange County,” said Luu. ” … They found that 504 motor vehicle crashes were attributable to excessive drinking and that in one year here in Orange County, the cost of that excessive drinking was $111.8 million — with the majority of those costs being borne by someone other than the excessive drinker themselves.”

If you choose to drink, it is best to do so in moderation, and always plan for a sober ride home.  The Dietary Guidelines for Americans defines drinking in moderation as one drink or less in a day for individuals assigned female at birth, or two or less for individuals assigned male at birth, according to the CDC.
