Welcome to “Thriving in Orange!” A monthly segment presented by Orange County Economic Development, “Thriving in Orange” features conversations with local business owners about what it’s like to live and work in Orange County, especially in light of the county’s small business grant program which launched in 2015 and has helped small businesses and small business owners with well over $100,000 in grants each year!
This month, 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck has a conversation with Lori Hernandez, founder of the Franklin Street Yoga Center! Located on West Franklin, right in the middle of some of Chapel Hill’s most recognizable Franklin Street locations, this yoga studio has become a fixture in the community — especially since moving to its current location!
“I remember walking by the space and thinking ‘this is going to be a huge decision,'” said Hernandez. “But, I had also come from being in sales where I was a hundred percent commissioned and I thought, you know, it’s not gonna be any different. The wonderful thing about Chapel Hill is that we always get a new influx of people all the time — I like to call our town a vampire town, it never ages!”
That continual refresh of new folks in the community, paired with long-time patrons, has made Franklin Street Yoga into both a successful local business fixture and a well-regarded place for wellness, healing and full-body motion. From local residents to sports team collaborations, there’s no shortage of applications of Franklin Street Yoga’s program.
“When on your mat, we get you to focus on your breath, how your breath goes is how the moment goes, so that you respond to life rather than react to life,” said Hernandez. “When you’re moving and breathing, you start to notice your habits, your tendencies, how you show up when the moment might be challenging … It’s all about taking care of yourself, showing up differently for others. We interact with so many people on any given day, and we leave a part of us with them.”
