Welcome to “Thriving in Orange!” A monthly segment presented by Orange County Economic Development, “Thriving in Orange” features conversations with local business owners about what it’s like to live and work in Orange County, especially in light of the county’s small business grant program which launched in 2015 and has helped small businesses and small business owners with well over $100,000 in grants each year!
This month, 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck has a conversation with Adam Canosa of Algorhythmic Labs. A music educator and education technology designer, Canosa has worked to find solutions for students and classrooms that not only fit unique use cases, but provide paths for acceleration and development at a pace set by students themselves.
“I am a music educator, I’ve taught for 12 years,” said Canosa. “I teach at Hillsborough Elementary. Maybe seven or eight years ago, I decided to start sort of innovating in my classroom by designing some short little games that my students could play to help review music theory.”
As efforts continued and the games found stronger footing, students got progressively more invested and interested in not just the learning process, but the process of creating the games they were playing.
“The kids were extremely excited by it,” said Canosa. “They understood that I was not a professional coder, developer, any of that. And, so, it was my best effort to give them something fun. I think that they really gravitated toward it, they offered great feedback. They found bugs for me. It was this beautiful kind of design-thinking-in-action from the students, reiterating over the idea of making it better and closer to something that they’d enjoy.”
Things have changed quite a bit for Algorhythmic Labs in the interim, COVID presented an especially unique set of challenges, but Songcraft and Algorhythmic have kept moving forward and finding new ways to make learning music fun and practical.
