UNC has announced it will hold its 2024 Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. Traditionally, the ceremony has been held on Mother’s Day – the second Sunday in May.
“We have moved to an evening ceremony to provide a more celebratory atmosphere for our graduates,” the university said, “and offer families coming from long distances more time to return home on Sunday.”
According to the school, moving the event to Saturday also provides more flexibility to move the date in the event of inclement weather. UNC lists the inclement weather date and time as Sunday, May 12 at 9 a.m.
The Doctoral Hooding ceremony will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Dean Smith Center. Individual school ceremony details can be found here. No speaker has yet been announced for Spring Commencement.
According to former UNC General Alumni Association president Doug Dibbert, Spring Commencement has been held on Mother’s Day since 1972. The last few years have seen departures from that tradition, though, due to the COVID pandemic. The Class of 2020 celebrated its commencement in October of 2021, and the Class of 2021 did so in several ceremonies over three days during the 2021 Mother’s Day weekend.
