Another total solar eclipse will make its way across the United States in April 2024, almost seven years after a total solar eclipse captivated Americans across the country.
The eclipse will make its away from south to north across thirteen states: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
While North Carolina doesn’t lie within the path of totality, residents of Chapel Hill will be able to view the eclipse in 80 percent totality. That’s less than the 93 percent totality seen in the Triangle during the Great American Eclipse in 2017, but it will still be visible and dramatic.

According to NASA, the eclipse will begin shortly after 11 a.m. along the western coast of Mexico before making its way toward Texas. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland in Canada just after 5 p.m.
Total solar eclipses can be viewed safely with eclipse glasses. Only those within the path of totality can view the total solar eclipse without glasses, and only when the sun is completely obscured. Otherwise, NASA urges eclipse viewers to wear glasses at all times when facing the sun. It is also important to note that eclipse glasses are different from everyday sunglasses.
