Former Congressman David Price will receive a major honor from the state next month: he’s been named as one of six recipients of this year’s North Carolina Award.
Established in 1961 and presented every year since 1964, the North Carolina Award recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to the state in fine art, literature, science, and – in Price’s case – public service. It’s the highest civilian honor given by the state.
A resident of Chapel Hill, David Price retired last year after more than three decades representing North Carolina’s Fourth District in the U.S. House. First elected in 1986, he served almost uninterrupted for 17 terms, ultimately rising to leadership positions in the House Appropriations Committee, the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies, and the House Democracy Partnership, among others.
In addition to his service in the U.S. House, David Price is also an emeritus professor of political science at Duke and the author of four books including “The Congressional Experience.”
David Price is one of six recipients of the 2023 North Carolina Award. Other recipients include fellow ex-Congressman G.K. Butterfield; Charlotte Hornets executive Fred Whitfield; poet Marsha White Warren; artist Patrick Dougherty (known locally for his outdoor stickwork sculptures); and CDC director Dr. Mandy Cohen, who served as North Carolina’s health secretary through the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
