North Carolina Republicans have rolled out a compromise state government budget that’s been essentially hammered out only by them.
Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore unveiled highlights of the proposal Tuesday, with a goal to vote on it later this week, then send it to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.
Cooper’s likely to veto the proposal. If enough Democrats stick with him the veto will be upheld, setting up a stalemate.
The GOP leaders argue they wanted to pass a budget Cooper would accept, but he won’t provide specific recommendations and is fixated on expanding Medicaid.
Cooper says there’s been no positive response to his budget ideas, and asked Moore and Berger not to rush and pass a bad budget.
