Two more local school districts have decided to close next Wednesday ahead of a large teacher protest.

The Alamance-Burlington School District announced on Friday evening that the district would be making May 16 an optional teacher workday. The Chatham County Schools Bard of Education held a meeting Friday evening where the board took a similar vote to change Wednesday to an optional teacher workday.

The move comes as districts across the state – including Chapel Hill – Carrboro and Orange school districts – have chosen to close schools for the day after the number of requests for personal leave from teachers has exceeded the available substitute pools.

The North Carolina Association of Educators has been organizing a teacher protest in coordination with the return of the North Carolina General Assembly for the upcoming short legislative session. The Day of Advocacy comes after teacher strikes have taken place in some other states battling for teacher pay raises and increased education funding.

Students will not have to make up the school day. CHCCS and OCS officials have said they will work with local organizations to provide meals for students who rely on free-and-reduced lunch during the school year.
