The Eno River Association is an organization and land trust dedicated to protecting public parks and natural resources. It also focuses on acquiring land around the Eno River and preserving it and the wildlife that live there.
According to its website, the organization has 2,000 acres left to acquire for Eno River State Park, but the organization acquired 56 of those acres earlier this month.
The land obtained includes almost a mile of frontage on the Eno and 2,200 linear feet along two tributary streams in Orange County. The land is north of US Highway 70 West and is upstream of Corporation Lake and Lake Ben Johnston.
Executive Director Robin Jacobs said the Eno River Association’s members and volunteers are grateful to the landowners because they contacted the organization before putting the land on the market.
According to a release from the association, the project benefits over half a million residents and businesses from Orange County to Raleigh and other parts of Wake County. It will also protect rare aquatic species such as freshwater mussels and fish, the Atlantic pigtoe, creeper, notched rainbow and Carolina darter.
The project is supported by the City of Raleigh, the Eno River Association’s Allen Lloyd Fund for the Protection of the Upper Eno, the Margaret C. Nygard Land Acquisition Fund and the landowners.
The organization is still seeking grants and contributions to offset the rest of the $285,000 dollar out-of-pocket costs. Click here for information on how to donate.
