Two important meetings will be held this week to discuss future transportation projects in Chapel Hill.
A meeting on Tuesday will discuss the Estes Drive project to build bike and pedestrian walkways along the road. The public is welcome to drop in from 5-7 at Town Hall.
On Wednesday, transit officials will cover some long term goals for the town from 7-9 in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.
David Bonk is the Long Range Transportation Planning Manager with the Town of Chapel Hill. He said the Estes Drive project has been in the works for several years.
“The intent is to provide for bike facilities and sidewalk pedestrian facilities from Martin Luther King all the way to Caswell,” said Bonk.
At the meeting the public can voice their opinion on several different plans for the bike lanes.
“The reason for the meetings… is to get some public input on the three design options that our consultant has prepared,” said Bonk.
After a final design is selected it will be presented to the Town Council on February 22.
The Estes Drive project will cost $2.3 million with much of that money coming from federal funds.
“It is funded from monies that the town has received from the Regional Metropolitan Planning Organization and the federal government,” said Bonk.
The Wednesday meeting will cover some more long range goals for transportation in Chapel Hill and is another opportunity for the public to voice their opinion. Transit officials will discuss light rail implementation, hear recommendations about routes and stops and present an overview of Chapel Hill Transit’s finances. Bonk said the light rail project is still in the works but he is optimistic the project will happen in the future.
