Protests erupted all over the country Monday night, in the wake of a grand jury’s decision not to indict the police officer who fatally shot Ferguson, Missouri teen Michael Brown.
Those protests made their way to Chapel Hill as well, at an impromptu gathering and candlelight vigil at Peace and Justice Plaza on Franklin Street shortly before midnight. Photos on social media indicated several hundred people present, many of whom were UNC students.
Tuesday on UNC campus, hundreds of students staged a walk-out at noon, meeting in the Pit to stand in silence before lying on the ground for 4.5 minutes to honor Michael Brown.
There will be more vigils for Michael Brown in our community in the coming days. Tuesday there’s one planned for 6 p.m. at the corner of Elliot Road and Franklin Street, and Wednesday evening there will be a vigil at 6:30 at Carrboro Town Hall.
Carrboro Aldermen Michelle Johnson and Damon Seils are among the organizers of that event.
You can find a link to other vigils planned throughout North Carolina here.
