The United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against North Carolina on Monday. In a press conference, Attorney General Loretta Lynch explained the department’s reasoning for the suit.
Lynch, a native North Carolinian, took direct aim at her home state’s government.

Earlier in the day, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory filed his own lawsuit against the Department of Justice. McCrory released a statement on the lawsuit Monday morning:
“The Obama administration is bypassing Congress by attempting to rewrite the law and set restroom policies for public and private employers across the country, not just North Carolina. This is now a national issue that applies to every state and it needs to be resolved at the federal level. They are now telling every government agency and every company that employs more than 15 people that men should be allowed to use a women’s locker room, restroom or shower facility.”
North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger also filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice on Monday.
