Many local government boards are still on their summer break – but several boards have already resumed their regular schedules, and there are some significant meetings this week. Maybe the highest-profile meeting will be Monday in Hillsborough, as the Orange County School Board gathers for the first time since the resignation of superintendent Monique Felder.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Orange County School Board meets at 7 p.m. Monday, August 14, in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. This week’s official agenda is a light one, but this will be the board’s first meeting since superintendent Monique Felder abruptly resigned last month, reportedly under pressure from the board. Parents in the district have spoken out publicly in support of Felder, and there’s likely to be a big turnout for public comment as residents weigh in on that issue. Click here for the full agenda, which also includes a work session on teaching-position allotments for the coming school year.

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners also meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 14. Their agenda includes a presentation on the results of an audit from the 2021-22 fiscal year, and a discussion about using town employee ID cards as valid voter IDs in future elections. Get the full agenda at this link.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board is set to meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 17. Tops on their agenda: board members will review and vote to approve a district-wide curriculum and instruction management plan. Click here for the full agenda.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 14. The board will hold a public hearing on a proposal to change the mayor’s term from a two-year to a four-year term, and they’ll vote on whether to move forward on intersection improvements along 15/501. Get the full agenda here.

The Chatham County School Board also meets Monday, August 14, beginning at 6 p.m. Click here for the agenda, which includes a possible update to the district’s code of civility to strengthen penalties for discrimination, harassment, and bullying, as well as failing to report threats of possible violence.

In Durham, County Commissioners meet twice this week: first at 7 p.m. Monday, August 14, with an agenda that includes an update on gun violence from Project Safe Neighborhood; then a joint meeting with the Durham school board on Tuesday, August 15, starting at 9 a.m. Click here for Monday’s agenda.
