The NAACP is concerned that no historically black colleges or universities were chosen for North Carolina’s new teaching fellows program.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that NAACP President Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman said in a statement this week that he questions why no historically black school was among the five chosen for the program that provides scholarships for prospective teachers of science, math and special education.
The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission selected Elon University, Meredith College, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and UNC-Charlotte.
North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro was the only historically black school to apply.
The newspaper reported North Carolina’s teaching workforce is 80 percent white. The public school system is less than 50 percent white.
