As a way to promote fire safety during the holidays, the Chapel Hill Fire Department has started their annual Keep the Wreath Green event with the wreath hanging outside of their fire station.

“We have green bulbs on the big wreath and our goal is to keep those bulbs green throughout the holiday season,” said Todd Iager, deputy chief fire marshal. “Anytime we have a fire we change a green bulb to red bulb, so we want everyone to help us keep that wreath green.”

From December 2, 2015 until January 1, 2016, the Chapel Hill Fire Department will display an illuminated wreath on the front of Fire Station No.1, located at 403 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

“I’ve been here for about two years now,” Iager said. “It was a campaign that was here when I got here and I just thought it was brilliant. It’s simple and it’s straightforward.”

As of Friday, none of the bulbs had been changed and Iager said he hopes it stays that way.
