****UPDATE: A three-judge panel approved the redrawn congressional map and congressional candidate filing is now open.****

North Carolina officially kicks off the 2020 campaign with the opening of candidate filing on Monday. Hundreds of elected positions such as governor and U.S. senator, in the state legislature and on the courts, will be open.

The State Board of Elections and all county boards begin taking candidate paperwork and filing fees at midday Monday. The filing period ends at noon December 20.

Primaries will be held March 3 between multiple candidates from the same party vying for the same job.

Congressional candidate filings are the exception for now. The state board won’t take them while a three-judge panel sorts out whether replacement districts approved by Republicans who lost another political gerrymandering case should be used for the election cycle. The panel will discuss on Monday whether the U.S. House district map Republican state legislators approved last month should be used in the 2020 elections or be redrawn yet again.

Elected officials already seeking reelection include Democratic Governor Roy Cooper and Republican Senator Thom Tillis.
