CHAPEL HILL – Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina announced Friday it will close its headquarters in Chapel Hill, moving its Triangle operations to a central campus in Durham.

Lew Borman, spokesperson for BCBS, said a definitive date has not yet been set to close the building, though he expects to relocate the office’s employees by the end of 2014. Borman says the relocation will take place in phases starting this year.

“We’ve taken a big step today towards that central campus with the purchase of two additional buildings in University Place where our campus in Durham has existed for a good number of years,” Borman said.

Borman says there will be no lay-offs as a result of the move.

“A part of the issue with not having a definitive date is the fact that health care reforms will enable us to do additional hires,” Borman said.

The newly-purchased Durham offices are in is a space called The Commons off University Drive. Borman says it was costing BCBS too much in utilities and services fees to operate the Chapel Hill location off 15-501.

“There was an opportunity in both timing and market to move forward with the two new buildings. We wanted to move towards an attractive, walkable, and environmentally friendly campus,” he said.

BCBS is a not-for-profit, fully taxed company and is the largest health insurer in the state, with over 4,000 employees serving more than 3.6 million customers.
