This year, UNC made national headlines following the Board of Trustees decision to "take no action" on Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones' tenure application.

The UNC NAACP held a demonstration at the steps of South Building on Monday where protestors spoke out against the UNC Police Department following an altercation with demonstrators at the UNC Board of Trustees last meeting.

Multiple student-led groups at UNC held a press conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss next steps for the university’s Black community and to present demands to campus leadership following the Nikole Hannah-Jones tenure controversy.

Less than a week after UNC’s Board of Trustees granted Nikole Hannah-Jones tenure, the award-winning journalist said she will not be joining the UNC faculty.

The UNC Board of Trustees is changing as the terms of six trustees come to an end Thursday. The timing of the special meeting to decide Nikole Hannah-Jones' tenure was likely because the terms of several trustees are set to expire. 

While Nikole Hannah-Jones was granted a tenured professorship after weeks of public scrutiny, some Black community members, who attended the Board of Trustees meeting Wednesday, said that is not enough.

Student leaders called for Hannah-Jones to immediately receive tenure and said they believe the Board of Trustees inaction is symbolic of a larger injustice to Black students, faculty and community members.

At least three professors of color announced they are leaving the university for other opportunities in the past week alone and the UNC Student Body President wrote an open letter calling for a university-wide reckoning.
