Kevin Foy teaches environmental law and justice at North Carolina Central University School of Law. Before he began teaching, he served eight years as Mayor Chapel Hill and was also a practicing attorney. Kevin and his wife Nancy have lived in Chapel Hill since 1990, when they came here to go to school. Chapel Hill was named America’s Most Livable City when Kevin was Mayor.

Franklin Gomez Flores was born in Guatemala and raised in Siler City. He attended Chatham Co. public schools starting in kindergarten through to his 2012 graduation from Jordan Matthews High School. Franklin next graduated from UNC Chapel Hill where he earned his Bachelors’ degree in Biology. Pursuing an interest in policy, he served on Chatham County’s Planning Board and at 26 years of age, was the youngest person and the first Latino to be elected and to serve on Chatham County’s Board of Commissioners.

Beth Wood is a Certified Public Accountant in her fourth term as North Carolina’s elected State Auditor. She is a long-time public servant with nearly 30 years of auditing experience, having worked in the Auditor’s Office for nearly 10 years before her election in 2008 and also in the State Treasurer’s Office. Auditor Wood is the first woman to serve as the State Auditor in North Carolina. By focusing in the areas of Medicaid, Information Technology, Transportation, and agency accountability for the spending of taxpayer dollars, her administration has identified hundreds of millions of dollars in wasteful spending. These audits have resulted in legislation to improve the oversight and efficiency of state government, earning her office the nickname of the “Taxpayers’ Watchdog.”

Dr. Dunn earned his doctorate at UNC Chapel Hill and taught for 15 years at Guilford College before coming to UNCA in 2013. He was born and raised in rural Chatham County, North Carolina, the son of postal employees who also farmed and ran a hardware store. Guatemala is his second home and his most recent work there has focused on US Citizens, who like him, have come to love that country.
Jeff Jones is currently an Associate Professor of Russian-Soviet and contemporary world history at UNC Greensboro. He is completing his second book entitled Smoke, Mirrors and Memories: A Cultural History of the Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989, forthcoming in 2023. He also has published several articles.
