His first book, “The Coming of The American Behemoth: The Origins of Fascism in the United States, 1920-1940” was published in 2018. He at work on a sequel about the increasing peril of American fascism since Donald Trump won the White House in 2016.

This Week:   

Born into a blue collar and agricultural clan in rural Pennsylvania, Jim Crawford was the first in his family to graduate from college. Earning his PhD from UNC, he taught US and World History at several universities in piedmont North Carolina for several decades. He served as chairman of the Chatham County board of commissioners, and currently serves as trustee for Central Carolina Community College. He is a firm believer in American democracy and trusts that the constitution will hold firm now as it has in past crises despite the broken, distempered electorate.

Madison Haley is the Climate and Plastics Advocacy Fellow at the Haw River Assembly (HRA), a local environmental organization founded in 1982 to restore and protect the Haw River and Jordan Lake. As an organization, HRA seeks to promote environmental education, conservation and pollution prevention, to speak as a voice for the river in the public arena, and to put into peoples’ hands the tools and the knowledge they need to be effective guardians of the river. Madison works specifically on plastic pollution issues both on the ground through a community science “Trash Trap” program and by advocating for upstream solutions. She has a background in water resource engineering and public health, and currently resides in Carrboro.

Colin Campbell is the capitol bureau chief, leading politics coverage for North Carolina Public Radio – WUNC. He has covered North Carolina politics and state government since 2014, starting as a reporter for The News & Observer in Raleigh. He later led the NC Insider state government news service before moving to Business North Carolina magazine to launch its daily political newsletter, the North Carolina Tribune. Prior to entering the wild world of state politics, Colin covered Raleigh city government and Johnston County for the N&O. He’s a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill’s journalism school who started his media career at age 14, working as a news reader, classical music host and alternative rock DJ for Charlottesville, Va., radio stations WNRN and WTJU.

This Week: 
Dr. Gregory D. Goins is the Associate Dean for Agricultural Research and a Professor of Crop Science at North Carolina A&T State University. He is the co-author of the 2010 USDA 4-H National Youth Science Experiment (the first-ever and only 4-H National Science Experiment to originate from an 1890 Land-Grant University). In 2020 he led the creation of the Small Farms Resource and Innovation Center (SFRIC) in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES).  He is currently leading a team of researchers across the state on a Phase I NSF Regional Innovation Engine Project.  The Innovation Engine is developing a 42-county Agricultural Tech Innovation Corridor purposed to benefit underserved areas of the state.

This Week: 

Lisa Sorg is the North Carolina reporter for Inside Climate News. A journalist for 30 years, Sorg covers energy, climate environment and agriculture, as well as the social justice impacts of pollution and corporate malfeasance. She has won dozens of awards for her news, public service and investigative reporting. In 2022, she received the Stokes Award from the National Press Foundation for her two-part story about the environmental damage from a former missile plant on a Black and Latinx neighborhood in Burlington. Sorg was previously an environmental investigative reporter at NC Newsline, a nonprofit media outlet based in Raleigh. She has also worked at alt-weeklies, dailies and magazines. Originally from rural Indiana, she lives in Durham, N.C.

Greg O’Connor spent 24yrs on the fixed income trading floor specializing in U.S Treasury and Agency Securities, concluding his career as a Managing Director. In his second career, O’Connor founded and ran one of the country’s top youth athletic training facilities in Cornelius NC. With the  founding of REAL Economics, he returns to his passion of economic analysis and political messaging, attempting to elevate Democratic Economic Fluency.

This Week: Ryan Jenkins was born to 2 career US Army Officers in Landstuhl, Germany, and moved to Fayetteville, NC, at a young age where he spent most of his childhood. He attended UNC Chapel Hill for a BA in Peace, War & Defense and History and King’s College London (University College London) for an MA in War.  He has been active in the Democratic Party for 25 years, serving in roles from precinct secretary to President of the Progressive Caucus of North Carolina.
