This Week:     

Dr. Grace “Gracie” Galloway, PhD was born to a mother who was a Republican and Catholic, and Buddhist Chinese father who was a Democrat. She learned very quickly that politics was just a word—that the goals were what mattered. A nurse with degrees in Health Administration and a PhD in Public Health, Gracie is an active and inspirational community organizer. Caring for the sick, underprivileged and poor for over 45 years starting in Vietnam from 1967 to 1971 working with Catholic Relief to assist war orphans, rape victims, and the children of rape, she now provides free healthcare in Cabarrus County to the unhoused and to those without insurance. Gracie is active in veterans causes, minority issues, and a volunteer in the North Carolina Democratic Party having worked in positions including Precinct Chair, County Chair, District Chair, Chair Cabarrus County Democratic Woman, and 3 terms with the Democratic Women of North Carolina. This Week:     

Al Cooke grew up in Wilmington, NC where he spent a lot of time at nearby Wrightsville Beach as a teenage beach bum. His education includes 2 Bachelors degrees: BA in Religion and Philosophy, 1970 and BS in Horticultural Science, 2001 as well as Master of Horticultural Science, 2006. In 1972-73 he spent several months living out of a backpack and hitchhiking cross country. After eventually going back to school, he spent a career as an Agricultural Extension Agent for NC State University. Since retiring he has focused on writing and gardening on a wooded property in Chatham County, North Carolina with his wife Daphne Hill.

Sera Cuni is the chef/owner of Café Root Cellar in Pittsboro and the Root Cellar Café & Catering in Chapel Hill. Classically trained in the culinary arts, Sera launched her career in her home state of Connecticut, where her early kitchen experiences included celebrated restaurants Main and Hopewell, Americus on the Wharf, and Pastis. These experiences informed and influenced the cuisine she loves to cook today – creative and flavorful dishes that reflect the vast diversity of foods across the Midwestern and Southern United States. A founding member of the N.C. Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, Sera devotes her free time to supporting women culinary entrepreneurs and working with nonprofits to address food insecurity in North Carolina.
