William Scott Kelly (March 15, 1951 – January 31, 2025)

William Scott Kelly died in Charlotte, NC from complications of a stroke. He was the son of William Clavon Kelly and Betty Elizabeth “Jo” Kelly (nee Lynn).

Scott lived in Chapel Hill from about 1969 until 1990 when he was stolen away from the Southern Part of Heaven by his wife, Catherine Munson. They settled in Fort Mill, SC. He primarily worked as a landlord and as a Heating and Air Conditioning installer/repairman. He loved music, food, and the Tar Heels. When crippled by arthritis he took up praying for several hours each day as his occupation.

You may have known him as:

  • A classmate, particularly in Bernard Boyd’s religion classes
  • Guy who lived in the morgue
  • Worker in Memorial Hospital’s shipping department
  • Cook at many restaurants, including Papagayo
  • Runner, especially through the Botanical Garden
  • Musician, aka, the young man with the guitar
  • Frequenter of He’s Not Here, at the bar shouting out the answers to Jeopardy.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Munson of Wilmington, NC, His sons William Paul Kelly of Baltimore, MD and James Scott Kelly of Wilmington, NC. Also survived by stepbrother Ed Robbs and his wife Rosina of Chaparral, NM; and his step sister Karen Yoder along with her husband Gary Olnovich of Cornelius, NC. He is also survived by some of his cousins and their children.

A memorial service will be held at Charlotte Friends Meeting, 570 Rocky River Road West, Charlotte, NC on September 28 at 12:15. Meeting for Worship is the same day starting at 10 am and all are welcome to attend. Fellowship starts at about 11:15-11:30. Attendance by zoom is possible.
