UNC Women’s Basketball Receives No. 4 Seed in NCAA Tournament, Will Host Games in Chapel Hill

Carmichael Arena will host NCAA Tournament action for the second consecutive season.

UNC was revealed as a top 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament Saturday, meaning the Tar Heels will host first- and second-round matchups in Chapel Hill. Carolina will face No. 13 seed Western Illinois in the tournament’s first round Friday. The winner of that game will face either No. 5 Maryland or No. 12 Murray State in the second round Sunday. UNC is in the tournament’s Fort Worth 1 Region along with No. 1 overall seed UConn. The Huskies are the defending national champions. For a full look at the NCAA Tournament bracket, click here.

The Tar Heels will enter the tournament with a 26-7 overall record, having won 13 of their last 15 games. The only two losses during that stretch came at Duke and against Louisville on a neutral court. Both the Blue Devils and Cardinals will also be hosting NCAA Tournament games at their home arenas.

Carolina’s 14 ACC regular-season wins and third-place finish in the conference standings were both program bests under head coach Courtney Banghart’s leadership. The 2025-26 season is Banghart’s seventh with the team. This season will mark the second straight year the NCAA Tournament has come to Chapel Hill. Prior to 2025, UNC hadn’t served as a home site since 2015.

UNC is seeking its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16 and third overall under Banghart. Carolina hasn’t advanced farther than that round since 2014, and hasn’t reached the Final Four since 2007.
