UNC made a season-high 14 three-pointers and led by as many as 21 points in an 85-73 win against Kansas State in the second of three games at the Cancun Challenge in Mexico Friday.
Six different Tar Heels made at least one three on the day, with Lanie Grant and Nyla Brooks each hitting four. Brooks shot 4-6 from downtown on her way to scoring 14 points, while Grant led the team with 15. Indya Nivar, fresh off recording just the second triple-double in program history Thursday against South Dakota State, scored 14 points to go along with seven assists, two rebounds and four steals in 33 minutes. Nyla Harris also scored 14.
Carolina shot 30-55 (54.5 percent) from the floor and 18-28 (64.2 percent) in the first half. That hot shooting helped UNC overcome an early five-point deficit and lead 50-32 at halftime. It ballooned to 79-58 in the fourth quarter after a three-point play from Grant.
Friday’s game marked the third time this season Carolina has shot higher than 50 percent from the field and the second time in three games. It was also the Tar Heels’ fourth consecutive game making at least 10 threes. The team’s longest such streak last season was just two games.
UNC is now 7-1 on the season, having won five consecutive games. The 12-point margin of victory against the Wildcats Friday was Carolina’s smallest of the season. Up next, the Tar Heels will go for a clean sweep of the Cancun Challenge when they face Columbia Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
