This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

With few meetings scheduled in Chatham or Durham County, this week’s focus is on Orange. Orange County Commissioners have a busy week with two separate meetings, including an all-day strategic planning retreat; they’ll also consider bike and pedestrian safety along the increasingly busy NC-54 corridor west of Carrboro. Elsewhere, the Carrboro Town Council will revisit plans for Westwood Cemetery, and the Chapel Hill Town Council will discuss (but not vote on) a proposal to expand the town’s water and sewer boundary (but not the rural buffer).

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners meet twice this week. First up is their regular meeting in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 19: commissioners will receive the final report of the county’s Schools Safety Task Force, and they’ll vote to approve a study with recommendations for multimodal traffic safety (including bike and pedestrian safety) along West NC-54. Then commissioners will reconvene for an all-day retreat on Thursday, September 21, to continue developing the county’s strategic plan. Click here for links to both agendas.

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 19. Council members will vote on a revised master plan for Westwood Cemetery and receive a presentation on a possible ordinance to ban gas-powered landscape equipment in town. Click here for a link to the full agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council is holding a work session Wednesday, September 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. Tops on the agenda: council members will discuss a proposal to expand the town’s water and sewer boundary further south on 15/501, as part of the ongoing effort to create more opportunity for new housing, especially affordable housing. (The water/sewer boundary is separate from the town’s rural buffer, which would remain unchanged.) Council members will also hear staff recommendations following a recent assessment of town boards and commissions. Get the full agenda at this link.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets Thursday, September 21, starting at 6 p.m. in the Lincoln Center on Merritt Mill Road. Superintendent Nyah Hamlett will report on the ongoing bus driver shortage and last year’s end-of-year test results, and board members will consider approving an update to the district’s multi-language and dual-language program. Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, September 18, at the Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro. The meeting begins with a work session at 4 p.m., followed by the board’s regular meeting at 6:00; board members will hear a presentation on next year’s budget and hold a public hearing on possible legislative redistricting for future elections. Finally, the Durham City Council meets twice this week. Their first meeting is 7 p.m. Monday, September 18, with an agenda that includes several rezoning proposals; then the council will reconvene for a work session at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 21. Get the agendas for both meetings at this link.
