Mitch Trubisky may be laughing all the way to the bank.
The former UNC quarterback must be wondering what all the fuss is about. He was booed at the United Center when introduced at a Chicago Bulls playoff game. He is being abused in the media for being fodder in one of the worst so-called draft trades in history, and he keeps wondering how he ended up with the Bears – while delighted to be there and on his way to a multi-million dollar contract.
The critics, among them long-suffering Bears fans, hardly have a leg to stand on when you consider the record of this woebegone one-time NFL powerhouse. Da Bears have been to the playoffs exactly four times in this century, and not since 2010. They haven’t had quarterback who made the Pro Bowl since Jim McMahon in 1986. So who can blame them for making ANY trade to get ANY quarterback who MIGHT get them out of Losersville, like 3-13 last season and not a single winning record since 2012?
General Manager Ryan Pace should be the one booed, but he is also the one who did his homework and decided the Bears’ only chance to be a playoff team was to draft a potential franchise quarterback. Pace wasn’t keeping his job with Mike Glennon under center, and now he won’t get fired before the verdict is on Trubisky, which might take three seasons. And if Mitch turns out to be as good as SOME teams that also wanted him believe, who will care that Pace gave up three draft choices to insure he could get his man?
The Bears weren’t worried that the 49ers would pick Trubisky ahead of them; they were worried about other teams trading up for the second spot and that Trubisky would be gone by the time they made the third pick. That would have left them without a quarterback of the future, more losing and Pace losing his job. So what’s wrong with gambling in a situation like that?
Their fans boo Trubisky because they are used to booing the Bears. What do they know about any quarterback in the draft? They will keep booing until they can start cheering. At least Mitch gives them the chance to prove they’re the dumbest fan base in football.
