If you’re reaching for the gluten-free chicken nuggets in your freezer, you might want to take a closer look.

The USDA has recalled 20,232 pounds of Bell & Evans Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Nuggets with a “Best By” date of March 25, 2016.

Samples of the nuggets tested positive for staphylococcal contamination. The bacteria are not always killed during cooking and can cause food poisoning in as little as 30 minutes after being consumed.

Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea lasting one to three days.

The Food and Safety Inspection Service says it hasn’t received any reports of illness, but the recall is listed as a Class I hazard with a high health risk to the public.

Bell & Evans products are sold at Fresh Market and Whole Foods locations throughout the Triangle. Check for boxes with “P-516” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

This is the second time in less than a year that manufacturer Murry’s, Inc. has issued a nugget recall. Back in October, the company was forced to recall 30,000 pounds of gluten-free breaded chicken due to staph contamination.
