The Carrboro Board of Aldermen committed to opposing a Republican bill in the General Assembly that would allow magistrates and other state employees to opt out of serving same-sex couples.

Following the Orange County Commissioners’ lead, the aldermen unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday opposing Senate Bill 2.

The resolution “urges the General Assembly to reject any legislation that seeks to exempt government employees from serving their constitutional duties, including but not limited to same-sex couples in North Carolina.”

The resolution also directs the town manager and attorney to fight the legislation in court if it passes.
