Joe Burgess is this week’s WCHL Hometown Hero.20160730_115539

Joe began working with the Triangle Disability Awareness Council about seven years ago. He saw the
needs of how technology and special needs software could empower citizens with disabilities.  But, when he discovered that the cost of a program which speaks and reads to the disabled was over $1000, and more than the average blind person could afford, he fashioned a grant request to purchase this software for teaching and empowering citizens with disabilities.  There are now four centers and growing to serve the blind and those with special needs using this software.

Joe works at the United Way of the Greater Triangle.  Tim Miles, who nominated Joe, says:

“Joe’s passion and dedication for helping the community is truly life enhancing for everyone. He knows the importance of his role at Triangle United Way and does everything he can to follow through on their mission.”

Joe also started a bike co-op to help seniors and others who desired to get healthy by rebuilding donated bikes for those that could not afford them.

Tim adds, “He should be nominated not because of volunteer time but his big heart.”
