In an effort to alleviate the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on local artists, the Chatham Arts Council has partnered with several other art councils in North Carolina to provide grants for struggling artists.

More than $82,000 in ‘Artist Support Grants’ have recently been awarded to applicants in Chatham, Harnett, Johnson, Lee, and Wake counties. Led by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and in partnership with the North Carolina Arts Council, Raleigh Arts, and others, the Chatham Arts Council, also known as the CAC, recently named seven local artists to receive individual grants ranging up to $1,500 apiece.

The seven local artists the CAC selected to receive the funding were JR Butler, Britt Flood, Marjorie Hudson, Tony Peacock, Wendy Spitzer, Christian Tamburr, and Will Ridenour.

“The Chatham Arts Council is committed to supporting our community through service, solace, and hope this year,” said Cheryl Chamblee, Executive Director of the CAC, in a release with the announcement. “Through their amazing work, these talented artists are offering all of us service, solace, and hope – an endeavor that is incredibly difficult with the closures the arts community has been witness to.”

Since 1982, the CAC has sought to encourage creative thinking in Chatham County by investing in artists and pursuing efforts towards kids’ arts education. Some of these undertakings have included hosting gallery space for local artists, granting funding to non profits in the community, and working to alter schoolchildren’s exposure to the arts by creating scholarships, after school programs, classroom residences, and more.
