8/7/19 – Joe Jackson “Steppin’ Out”

Does the name David Ian Jackson mean anything to you?  Probably not.  But this English musician goes by the name of Joe Jackson, and that may be a little more familiar.  Actually, I guess Joe Jackson’s not really all that famous in America, but in England, they have a much better idea of what he can do.  He’s not just any old musician.  Joe is a singer/songwriter who plays multiple instruments, he’s a jazzman, producer and even composes Classical Music.  For years, he played the clubs in England, and continued to study music every chance he got.  He finally got a recording contract in the late 70s’, and scored a hit called “Is She Really Going Out With Him.”  You might hear that one every now and then here on 97.9 The Hill.  He did a lot of New Wave-sounding stuff, and was associated with what some have called “The Second British Invasion.”

In 1982, Jackson was living in the Big Apple, and released an album called “Night And Day.”  Off that LP came “Steppin’ Out,” which he said was inspired by the time he had spent in New York City.  “Steppin’ Out” is a little jazzy and extremely cool.  It was on the radio all over America for at least a couple of months.  This song was, by far, the biggest hit he ever had in this country, but for some reason, it’s one of those songs that’s sort of dropped through the cracks.  I could be wrong but I don’t think most people think about it a lot.  I always liked it, but I honestly haven’t thought about it a lot, either, but for some reason, it popped into my state of semi-consciousness this morning when I was getting ready to come to the radio station, and now I can’t get it out of my head.  So…here you go!  A great song from Joe Jackson…It’s time for “Steppin’ Out!”
