5/16/19 – John Mayer “I Guess I Just Feel Like”
It doesn’t have to be an old song to get stuck in my head. I know most of the songs I share here have been around for a while, and they’re all good at bringing back memories for me…and hopefully, you, too. But once in a while a new song comes out that really grabs me and I love listening to it. Today’s edition of “The Music in My Head” is by John Mayer. And every time I hear this song, I have to focus in on it and crank it up really loud. Honestly, it’s just so cool, calming, and relaxing that I could listen to it over and over again without ever getting tired of it. Today’s tune is “I Guess I Feel Like.”
John Mayer has been around in the musical spotlight since the early 2,000’s. He’s an excellent singer/songwriter, and an outstanding guitarist. I guess the first song that put him in the spotlight was “Your Body Is A Wonderland.” There was “Daughters” as well. He came out with a couple of albums that were extremely popular and although some of the songs were good, I guess I just felt like ignoring him for the most part, because I kept hearing and reading all these stories about the way he was acting. Seems like he was always in the news for saying something I considered to be really stupid and self-centered, and then I saw a picture of him somewhere wearing a ridiculous bikini bathing suit, which just totally turned me away, and at that point I think my brain just said, “Okay…Enough of this guy.”
Over time, John Mayer has been linked, romantically, to a number of famous women, including Katie Perry, Jennifer Aniston, and Taylor Swift. He experienced some controversial run-ins with the media. Maybe he was getting a bad rap at first, because his behavior seemed to change. Or maybe he just grew up a bit. Mayer disappeared from the spotlight for a while. He’s in his early 40’s now. We all do dumb things when we’re young; I know I certainly did. His music seemed to take more of a turn toward blues and rock, as well, and I decided I really liked him when I saw a video with him performing “Dreams to Remember” with the legendary Buddy Guy. He’s played with not only Guy, but also B.B. King and Eric Clapton. There’s no question that he has the guitar chops, and his voice is smooth as silk. So now when he comes out with something new, I always pay attention. These days, I don’t really care about his personal life; I just like his music. Lately, he’s really gotten into The Grateful Dead’s music, and formed Dead And Company with Bob Weir, one of the members of the famous band. For the last 4 years, they’ve been putting on shows all over the place, and I’ve been told they’re really good!
I really like “Waiting On The World To Change,” another socially-conscious song Mayer put out. “I Guess I Just Feel Like” is a song all about current events and frustrations with the way things are, too. And the song is awesome. Even if it’s fresh and new! Now…Keep calm and carry on. Sit down, relax, and take a listen to John Mayer!
