6/6/17: John Sebastian & The Lovin’ Spoonful “Darlin’ Be Home Soon”

I woke up with the Lovin’ Spoonful playing in my head this morning. It wasn’t “Summer In The City,” though… or “Daydream” or “You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice.” It wasn’t even “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind” or “Do You Believe in Magic?” I do dig on all those upbeat tunes, for sure, but it was one of John Sebastian’s more mellow tunes that I couldn’t shake off this morning.

It was “Darlin’ Be Home Soon,” and I’ve always loved this song. It starts out slow, and gets downright orchestral towards the end. It’s a beautiful piece of music. Sebastian even performed it solo, in front of 400,000 people at Woodstock. “Darlin’ Be Home Soon” was written for the soundtrack of “You’re a Big Boy Now,” a mostly-forgotten Francis Ford Coppola coming-of-age film from 1966. The song has been covered by Joe Cocker and Bobby Darin, but it’s still the original that shines the brightest. So here you go, today’s edition of “The Music in My Head,” featuring the music that was in John Sebastian’s head in 1967.
