12/18/17: Argent “Hold Your Head Up”
Today, the music I can’t stop hearing is “Hold Your Head Up,” by Argent!
Argent was a rock and roll band started by, you guessed it, Rod Argent. He was one of the instrumental figures in one of the best groups to come out of the British Invasion, The Zombies. He’s primarily known as a keyboardist, but he’s very much a multi-instrumentalist. He’s also responsible for helping to write some of the great Zombies tunes that we all know and love, songs like “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No.” A few years later, he’d be a significant part of bringing “Time of the Season” to life. It’s all great stuff, and Rod Argent is a talented man.
When the Zombies broke up, he started his own band – known simply as “Argent.” They were known for playing heavier, progressive, less commercial music… and the song that’s in my head comes from 1972. It features some amazing work on the Hammond organ, courtesy of Argent himself, and his mastery on the keys really shines through. The lyrics of the song are also inspirational: hold your head up, no matter what! Don’t let ‘em grind you down! That’s the kind of thing we could all stand to hear a little more of, don’t you think?
