CHAPEL HILL – The UNC women’s lacrosse team is gearing up to face Northwestern for NCAA semifinal Friday in Philadelphia.

The match up is the fourth meeting between the HeelS and Northwestern in the NCAA Tournament in the last five years (2009 national title game, 2010 semifinal, 2011 semifinal, 2013 semifinal).

Carolina beat unseeded Loyola, 19-9, and Virginia, 13-9, to advance to Friday’s semifinals.  The Wildcats beat Stanford and PennState at home to advance to Villanova.

UNC beat Northwestern 11-8 earlier this season in Chapel Hill. Northwestern leads the all-time series with North Carolina, 10-3.  The teams have played in the regular season every year since 2005 and will be meeting in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.

The winner will face the victor of the second semifinal between top-seeded Maryland and fourth-seeded Syracuse on Sunday night.
