DURHAM – Henry Frazier has been fired as football coach at North Carolina Central, one week before the team opens the 2013 season.

A statement from the school Thursday didn’t give a specific reason for the firing, but it cited personal issues Frazier was facing and said those matters caused the school to shift attention from athletics and student-athletes.

Frazier was suspended in May 2012 following his arrest on a charge of assaulting a female. At the time, authorities said Frazier and his wife were arguing at their house when the alleged assault occurred. Frazier was reinstated as head coach two months later.

The school said assistant head football coach Dwayne Foster will serve as interim head coach.

N.C. Central opens the season against Duke on Aug. 31.
